
Resistance Now Kyiv: Theatre and Resistance
Theatre director, activist, and Artistic Director of Wiener Festwochen, Milo Rau, will visit Kyiv at the invitation of Opera aperta and proto produkciia.
His visit will be part of the global campaign for art and democracy RESISTANCE NOW!. This global initiative, which originated within the framework of the Vienna Festival, unites all cultural and civil society actors to stand together joined in a united, global and diverse response to rising nationalism. In 2024, 13 RESISTANCE NOW events took place across 11 countries — from New York to Taipei.
On November 28 at 14:00, a discussion will take place on the main stage of the Molodyy Theatre featuring:
- Milo Rau — director, activist, Artistic Director of Wiener Festwochen.
- Olena Apchel — Junior Lieutenant, Head of the Artillery Reconnaissance Command Post; also PhD, Candidate of Art Studies, playwright, and theatre director.
- Tamara Trunova — Chief Director of the Left Bank Theatre in Kyiv.

Milo Rau, born in 1977 in Bern, is the director of Wiener Festwochen. The director and author has created over 100 plays, films, books, and productions. His theatre works have been presented at all major international festivals, including Berlin Theatertreffen, the Avignon Festival, the Venice Biennale, Wiener Festwochen, and Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels, and have toured in more than 30 countries worldwide. From 2018 to 2024, Milo Rau served as Artistic Director of NTGent (Belgium).
Wiener Festwochen is one of the world’s most significant art and culture festivals. Each year in May and June, it presents pioneering works in theatre, music, dance, and visual arts, building a bridge between Vienna and the rest of the world. The festival was founded in 1951.
This event is organised in partnership with Molodyy Theatre.
The event is part of a programme of visits by international culture professionals to Ukraine, organised by Insha Osvita with the support of the Robert Bosch Stiftung, in partnership with proto produkciia, Opera aperta, Asortymentna kimnata, and the Antonin Artaud Fellowship.
